ABOUT
Roger Nuncio is a sought-after drummer, composer, and bandleader born in Monterrey, Nuevo León, and based in Mexico City. Known for his dynamic, emotionally charged playing, Nuncio has performed at major festivals and esteemed venues across the United States, Cuba, and South America.
He leads two distinct ensembles that reflect the breadth of his musical vision. The Inner Silence Project — a boundary-pushing quartet featuring guitarist Francisco Lelo de Larrea, pianist Paco López, and bassist Ubaldo Martinez — explores expansive sonic territory. Meanwhile, the Roger Nuncio Trio, with pianist Alex Mercado and bassist Pablo Sarre, offers a focused platform for his original compositions. He is the drummer for the UANL Big Band, the premier jazz ensemble of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL) in Monterrey, Mexico.
Over the course of his career, Nuncio has collaborated with a wide range of artists across both jazz and pop, including Miguel Bosé, Aleks Syntek, Eugenia León, Raúl Di Blasio, and Susana Zabaleta. Within the jazz world, he has shared the stage with luminaries such as Ted Piltzecker, Víctor Mendoza, Ney Rosauro, Joel Frahm, Ralph Alessi, Helen Sung, Roberto Verastegui, Agustín Bernal, Aaron Cruz, Li Xiaochuan, Dave Samuels, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Diego Maroto, Steve Weingart, and many others.
Music has been a lifelong presence for Nuncio. “I grew up under the piano,” he recalls. With a pianist father and a home full of music, he absorbed the language of rhythm and harmony from an early age. His father also owned a private music school, where Nuncio began his formal training — balancing high school coursework with rigorous afternoon sessions in drumming and harmony.
In 2005, Nuncio moved to New York to study at the Drummers Collective, where he trained under respected instructors including Peter Retzlaf, Guy Licata, and Ian Forman. During his time there, he connected with leading drummers like Matt Wilson, Ari Hoenig, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Jim Payne, Jeff Ballard, and Jojo Mayer. Alongside his development as a performer, Nuncio sharpened his compositional voice — drawing inspiration from sources as varied as Claude Debussy and the evocative language of film scores.
His performance résumé includes major festivals such as Jazz a la Calle (Uruguay), Festival de Música y Cine (Temecula), Festival de la Riviera Maya, Festival de Jazz de Nuevo León, Percuba (Havana), and the Festival de Jazz de Real de Catorce. He has also appeared in leading venues including Saxy Jazz Club and Maverick (Monterrey), Jazzatlán (Cholula and Mexico City), Zinco Jazz Club, Parker & Lenox, Casa Franca, Foro El Tejedor, Banter Jazz Club (Denton, TX), and prestigious theaters such as Aula Magna, Teatro de la Ciudad (Monterrey and Mexico City), and Auditorio San Pedro.
Nuncio is an educator who offers masterclasses and drum clinics. He is a proud endorser of Casa Veerkamp, Tama Drums, Vater Drumsticks, and Remo Drumheads.
